Picking up on our Meet the MBA Team series, next in the hot seat is Michael Scott, Development Manager at HEC Paris for Europe and Latin America. Perhaps one of the more glamorous-sounding jobs in the team, Development Managers are your first point of contact with HEC Paris MBA, responsible for meeting our prospective candidates at MBA fairs around the world or through Virtual Information Sessions online. They are here to answer your questions and advise you on the next step whilst promoting our program all over the globe.

Michael first came to HEC Paris MBA in 2010, when he spent a year working in Admissions before becoming a Development Manager. This cross-departmental experience means that Michael knows our Admissions Process inside out, and is able to give our potential candidates the best possible advice.

Before coming to HEC Paris, Michael was already working in the Higher Education Sector, running business English seminars and international exchange programmes. But coming to HEC Paris still marked a complete departure for him. “Representing HEC is extremely exciting. We are the Alma Mater of CEOs in Europe and our network of alumni is extremely strong. I work in a highly networked position, supporting the work of colleagues across all the MBA departments by promoting HEC MBA internationally. I connect with and attract potential applicants from all over the world every single day.”

Indeed, it is the human aspect of Michael’s job that really motivates him day-to-day, as he meets and interviews highly talented individuals around the world, answering their questions and giving them vital pre-application support. Diversity is a key value at the heart of our program, and Michael’s position within the MBA team allows him to meet people from many different backgrounds, something which he certainly doesn’t take for granted; “International mobility is something I really value in my job. The whole world is here on campus. We have many different nationalities in the classroom: 85% international students. We go really far afield to ensure that the MBA is as diverse as possible.”

Considering his expertise and his close work with our Admissions Team, it would be rude to talk to Michael and not ask him for some advice for those considering an MBA at HEC. “I get asked this a lot! There are definitely regional trends and differences between the candidates I am meeting in different countries but in general the same advice applies to everyone. At HEC Paris, we value quality over quantity so you should apply when are in a position to submit the strongest, most competitive application possible; don’t rush anything simply to make the first round. Take your time and do the homework. Try to really express why you are going for an MBA and why HEC is your first choice of school.”

So, what’s next for Michael in his Development quest? “Over the coming months I’ll be going back to many countries I’ve visited previously, from which we have many excellent participants. I am also visiting some countries for the first time like Georgia and Bulgaria. That’s really exciting and I know already that we have great candidates waiting to meet us there.”

Located in the MBA building, the CAREER MANAGEMENT CENTER (CMC) offers participants a rich array of services ranging from coaching to how to build a career plan via sector advice and meetings with businesses.

Customized services

Founded in 2009 at the initiative of Tony Somers, the CMC offers a very different approach from a standard career management department in that it provides individual follow-up throughout the students’ academic studies. Indeed, all these students already have professional experience and their decision to study at HEC often signifies a desire to change orientation and profession.

As soon as they arrive, students are issued a ‘passport’ containing the individual program they are to follow. This passport will accompany them throughout their studies. Beforehand, they will have had an individual interview in order to clarify their expectations and their character traits.

Students can then go on to pursue their studies and plan their career management along three specific lines: “Know Yourself”, “Know the Market”, and “Match Yourself and the Market”.

In parallel to students’ lessons, coaching sessions, workshops and learning modules are thus offered all year long, alternating with individual interviews. Theater classes and various other events are also proposed, including meetings with recruiters and alumni.

These alumni are very prominent and willing to share their experience and guide future graduates. Before leaving the campus, students write up a report for them, explaining their career plan. Following this work they get feedback and an assessment, both of which are much appreciated.

“Everyone should be able to find the job of their dreams; the CMC doesn’t actually supply jobs but is there to help define and build the participant’s aspirations,” explains Corinne Bonifay, Associate Director, Operations.

To achieve this, the CMC (in particular its team of Corporate Development Managers) tackles the “Match Yourself and the Market” aspect of the program through long-term or recent ties with businesses.

Events on campus come at very regular intervals during the fall, the main hiring season: MBA Career Day, participation in other cross-department forums (Consulting, Finance, Crossroads), company presentations, conferences, treks, etc.

Suffice to say that the role of the CMC is crucial to the image of the HEC MBA. Once they have graduated, 89% of participants change profession (just 8% return to their former company), and do so within three months following graduation.

Today internationally acknowledged by numerous companies, the MBA and its CMC continue to take up the challenges of a constantly changing world.

Adelaide FatetAdelaide Fatet

We’re sending a very warm welcome to Adelaide Fatet; the newest addition to our MBA team. Adelaide joined us in March 2013 as part of the Development Team, and is featured here in our Meet the Team series.

Adelaide’s background truly fits with our program; as a multinational French-Lebanese and Canadian who has lived and worked worldwide Adelaide can really identify with both prospective and current MBA participants. Educated in Political Sciences, Adelaide’s academic experience was split between France and Canada – equipping her with a real appreciation for international study. Having experienced an exciting career working for the French Embassy in Canada as a Diplomat and dealing with high profile officials and French companies based overseas, Adelaide made the move back to France two years ago.

After securing experience working for another French Business School, Adelaide looked for an opening in another international, top tier Business School. Teamed with our location in the heart of France and close to the world renowned business hub of Paris, HEC Paris met all Adelaide’s requirements to further continue with her career in Business Development.

Adelaide’s role here as a Development Manager focuses on recruiting the best participants to ensure the experience all participants receive is the best it can ever be. The Development Teams aim is to uphold the standards and integrity of the program. Adelaide centres on recruiting from North America, and Part-time students from France, informing interested prospective students about our program, the HEC MBA experience and the application procedure.

A piece of advice from Adelaide for anyone considering an MBA:

‘‘be sure of exactly why you wish to join an MBA program – it’s not a decision to be taken lightly as the program is an experience that will change your life.’’

It is vital all candidates have a clear goal to aim towards with the MBA, and Adelaide also believes in the importance of timing – ‘‘it’s paramount that it’s the right time in a candidate’s life to embark on an MBA program.’’

Speaking of more practical advice, Adelaide moved on to mention the importance of international exposure, career progression and having a sound GMAT score before considering an MBA program.

Equipped with an excellent life motto ‘Be daring and always do the best you can’ Adelaide is determined to aid our MBAs progression and development over her time here.

At HEC Paris MBA our staff members are as diverse and dedicated to the ideas of leadership, community and personal growth as the students we attract.  In our new blog feature: ‘Meet the Team’ we wanted to take you, our readers, behind the scenes to learn more about our team.

You’ve probably met them if you’re a student or an alum or you’ll probably meet them somewhere along your HEC Paris journey if you’re an applicant or a new admit.

Mathieu coordinates our Admissions team at HEC Paris MBA; ensuring applications are dealt with efficiently and effectively. Mathieu’s role centers on the Admission Juries and ensuring that all candidates receive the information and support they need during the application process.  Along with the Admissions Team, he oversees every application we receive to ensure an excellent selection of applicants with strong academic standing, personal progression and professional diversity.

Mathieu began working at HEC in March 2010 as an Admissions Officer. Prior to working here he studied Fashion Marketing in London, and graduated with a BA from The London College of Fashion.  Having experienced many other industries and after a change of heart he moved to the Education sector and joined us at HEC Paris.

Describe a typical day in your shoes

I arrive at the office, having dropped my son off at school. Next I get down to my emails; I always receive many throughout the night due to the time difference between us and many of our international applicants. Then, I’ll start responding to questions, organizing admissions meetings and dealing with funding issues.

Throughout the day the admissions team prepares all received applications for the Admissions Juries, where we discuss candidates’ profiles for selection to the MBA Program.

Twice per week my colleagues and some of the MBA students play basketball or handball, during lunch time, before getting back to work.
